Practical clipping notes
Types of horse clip explained
A clip name describes a pattern rather than a prescription. Record where your horse sweats after normal work, how long the coat stays wet and what shelter and checks you can provide. A horse that stays comfortable may need no clip.
Compare the coverage
- Bib: a small area under the neck and chest.
- Irish: a diagonal boundary towards the stifle, retaining more coat behind.
- Trace: lower neck and body; a higher line removes more.
- Chaser: retains coat along the upper neck as well as the back.
- Blanket: retains a covering over the back and quarters.
- Hunter: retains legs and a saddle patch.
- Full: removes the whole coat.
Plan before starting
Describe the areas you intend to leave, especially the head and legs, when booking a professional. Names and line heights vary. Choose the smallest useful change, then assess the horse after comparable work before taking off more.
Explore clip options to organise your questions. The result is a starting point for a discussion with an experienced clipper. Plan aftercare before the appointment.
